About me

Hi, I'm David, founder of The Calpe Social. I live just outside Glasgow and have been in love with cycling since I started during covid.
My bike has taken me all over Europe, from Sagres in Portugal, to the Sella Ronda in the Dolomites, with many Col's in between. This year I completed L'etape du Tour de France, the hardest challenge of my life (so far)
Instead of Munro bagging, I am Col bagging. I aim to climb as many of Europes major col's as I possibly can (and motivate some of you to join me!)Every winter since 2022 I take a road trip to Spain with my dog Freddie to avoid the grim Scottish winter for a couple of months and I always find I spend a couple of weeks in the Calpe. It is a paradise for cyclists. (mostly) very respectful
drivers, perfectly smooth tarmac, great views and the possibility of bumping into a world champion or 2.In February 2026, I hosted 8 friends at a similar Calpe villa. We had a great mix of abilities and personalities, giving me the motivation to go again in 2027!
About The Calpe Social

I created the Calpe Social for people like me who want an affordable group cycling holiday in the sun, but don't need, or a want a strict training camp. It's for those whose Strava is full of their ride photos. Those who plan holidays around where they can ride when they get there and those who value a quality cake stop as much as their summit picture. And finally, its for those who like to come home to a little bit of luxury after an exhausting day in the saddle.
If this all sounds like you then get in touch to secure your place!

The Cycling
Due to the terrain of the Costa Blanca, The Calpe Social is not advised for complete beginners. Weeks will be split into two ability levels - intermediate and advanced.
Intermediate
Intermediate riders should be capable of 60km rides with 600m of elevation gain.
A 100km ride with around 1000m of climbing would be a big day out for you. (This will be the queen stage of the week!)For those interested but unsure if they could manage these numbers, there are plenty of stores that hire E-bikes in the area. A few of last years guests hired them and had a great time!
Advanced
Advanced riders should be comfortably capable of 100km rides with 1000m of elevation. Most rides will involve this sort of elevation or more, with distances varying depending on the climbs we choose for that day.
During the week we will aim to bag as many of the local cols as we can. Val d'ebo, Coll de Rates, Sierra de Bernia, Cumbre del Sol and many more. Rides start at 9:30 and will all feature a cafe / lunch stop.
I will post the ride in the weeks group chat the night before and we can discuss any questions guests may have on our chosen route. All rides are guided by myself but it is advised, where possible to download the route to your chosen device which can help with anticipating sharp corners when the group spreads out on descents.

Meals & Post-ride activities
Meals are not included. On arrival day we will do a supermarket run to stock up on breakfast supplies, energy bars and gels for the rides and snacks for the villa. (Supermarkets are closed on Sundays)Last year, breakfast was usually continental style. Cereals, yoghurts, fruit and nuts etc. But we do occasionally drop down into Calpe for a Cafeseamos!Lunch is usually taken mid-ride.For evening meals, the full use of the villa kitchen is available to all guests, just remember to clean up after yourself!
We may also take a drive or taxi down into Calpe or a nearby town to find a restaurant. This can all be arranged between guests once numbers are confirmed.

Post-ride is the time to chill in our luxurious home for the week. Soak your legs in the pool, stretch off with some yoga on the terrace or look through your footage captured during the ride. For those with an abundance of energy we do arrange early evening activities such as padel, beach volleyball & sunset hikes (Calpe rock is a good one)
But keeping your legs on full recovery mode till the next day is also an option ;)

Getting around
Airport transfers are arranged separately. You are welcome to organise your own. To save money, once guests and their luggage are confirmed shared transfers can be arranged. I am happy to assist with this.
For anyone wanting the extra flexibility of their own car, ample free parking is available at the villa.
